In general, when there may be plenty of similar devices, it is impossible to fully automatically assign them with corresponding target positions without significant constraints. Therefore, the most reliable way is to download configuration node-by-node before the physical installation. It is possible to automatically determine available components, but manual assignment of target positions is required. Isolated control and configuration download applications enable transducer and actuator updates without a need for updating the application, as long as CANopen device profiles are followed. Efficient assembly process may also be supported by automatic generation of the gonfiguration packets with download control files.
The main concerns in CANopen systems, before other settings, are node-ID and bit-rate. It has already been described in the literature, how the download process can be integrated into the logical extension of the design process. This article starts by reviewing the bit-rate and node-ID assignment. Next, various aspects of plug’n’play are reviewed. Then a generic plug2play approach, without any special constraints, is described in detail. A discussion of some special topics follows the presented approach. Finally, the conclusions are described.
